I'm trying to copy photos to a CD-R in Vista. All the files are jpegs. I
insert a disc, it asks to format so we format. I copy the files I want from
my hardrive and paste them on the cd and it starts copying, then it says its
going to take an hour and a half to copy 500mb of pics. somethings seems
wrong to me. anyone else have a problem like this? Any solution?

Since when do CD-Rs need to be "formatted"?

Vista apparently got rid of the nice quick CD creation method of WXP and now
uses a lame version that takes a rediculous amout of time and wastes a lot
of space with this 'formatting'. I had software years ago that did
something similar similar - it allowed read/write/delete access to CD-Rs,
but of course, the space deleted from deleted files is not recovered. I was
so disappointed by my first attempt to move some files by putting them on a
CD-RW and carrying it to a WXP system that I haven't even tried to find out
how it is 'supposed' to work.

So basically I should look for a different solution instead of hoping that
creating a cd in vista would work.

You have probably allowed Vista to format the CD-R in the 'Live File System'
this allows you to add files and delete files from the CD-R (space is not
recovered however). I suspect that this is not what you actually want. When
you are asked to format the CD-R disc there should be a down chevron for
'Show Formatting Options', open this up and select 'Mastered' rather than
'Live File System'.
Now when you copy files to the CD-R they will be placed in a temporary area.
You can continue to add files until you select the 'burn to CD'. The files
will then be transferred to the CD, the CD finalized for use and no more
files can be added to it. This should be MUCH faster and results in a more
'standard' CD which can be read on many more machines.

Go the route that the other poster Michael said. I haven't tried it, yet,
but it sounds similar to the WXP process.

I just burned some files to DVD+R just the other day and Vista didn't ask to
format the disk first. I had no issues and the burn went fine. I've done
this twice using Vista to burn DVD+R's and no issues either time. Maybe the
issue is the quality of your media?
