Cannot delete email from inbox

Just had my new Windows 7 installed on my new computer. Email works fine in
sending and receiving but it will not delete the email unless I hit move to
folder/deleted folder. This is cumbersome with a lot of email to delete. I
have highlighted the mail, rt clicked and hit delete and just tried with the
delete key on the menu bar and nothing works but moving it to a folder.

What kind of mail account is this? POP3, IMAP or HTTP?

If IMAP, see the settings at Tools, Options, Advanced, including the
Maintenance button there.
