Cannot Display This Video Mode

I have a Dell comp and monitor (less than 7 months old), running XP Home,
SP2. I just went to Windows update and downloaded a Direct x 9 recommended
update as well as a video driver update. After restarting the computer (as
requested), I now get a black screen and "Cannot Display This Video Mode"
message on the monitor. I came up in safe mode and tried to restore to
earlier dates. On all restore attempts the computer tells me it cannot
restore to that date. I have deleted the video drivers and reinstalled.
Still get the black screen and the same message. I'm now thinking it could
be something with the Direct x download. Anyone have any recommendations?

Read quite a few posts regarding this problem. As a long shot, I booted up
in VGA mode and checked my monitor's refresh rate. It was set at 60 Hz. I
changed it to 75 Hz and all is now well. Strange!
