I've tried numerous times to dnld various recommended updates for my 5 yr old
pc but no matter which update I try I always get the same error message:
"the application failed to initialize properly oxc0000006 click on OK to
terminate the application"

Im using Win xp Hpme Edition, MS explorer ver 6.0.28 I did perform a
restore yesterday, but the was done due to unrelated problem. I dont think
the restore could have caused a problem with my update dnld capability, could
it?

By the way, the error message above seems to be popping up intermittently
now even when Im not trying to dnld updates. Just sitting at my desk I'll
hear that\
loud error warning sound and there it is on the screen! HELP!

What is the installed antivirus\security suite ?
When was the last time the system was scanned for the presence of
'unwanted visitors' ?
Using Internet Explorer, suggest you have it scanned here anyway:
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

Please post back with the result of that scan and then we'll get into
the updating issue.

To answer your quesdtion, at present,I have no anti virus or firewall at all,
we weree planning to inst those aftrer the update. But apparently there are
more serious issues becasue even when I try to dnld the MS scanner you
recommended, I get that same exact error message I get when I try to update;
"the application failed to initialize properly oxc0000006 click on OK to
terminate the application" Then a window comes up saying "Windows scanner
has encounted an error, try again!
This is bad, really bad.

Since you have no anti-virus and no firewall, your machine is most certainly
seriously infected.

Running w/out a firewall or AV app was foolish!

Once a system loses the ability to do onlines scans then the most secure
and fastest method of recovery is to wipe the HD and reinstall the OS.
It's quite obvious that the system in question is now pWned.

The second fastest method would be to pull the HardDrive, install it to
another system but not mark it Active, and do an offline scan with
BartPE with included anti-malware apps/programs.
That takes considerable technical skill.
You could bring the system to a reputable tech but the cost nor security
risk would be worth it.

Next time install a worthy, free AV and use the native XP firewall.
Otherwise you're going to end up in the same mess as you find yourself
in now.
I'd recommend either AntiVir or Avast for worthy, free AVs.
