cannot do windows update

i have xp home and when i try to use windows update i get this message on the
screen.


"Depending on your connection speed, this might take a minute. During this
time, you may receive one or more security warnings. Review each security
warning to ensure that the content is signed by Microsoft, and then click
Install or Yes to install the software"

nothing happens after this, i have left it on this page for about an hour
but still nothing, any help would be great

Some "thing" is interfering with the system's access to Windows Update.
Which firewall is running ? (The native XP firewall or a 3rd party one)
What is the installed antivirus ? ( If the installed AV has a script
blocking component, advise you to temporarily disable it prior to
accessing Windows Update )
Is there a version of Sun's JRE installed ? ( check in Add/Remove
Programs in the Control Panel to confirm )
