When I try to do Windows Updates or Microsoft Update, I get the following
error:
[Error number: 0x80070017]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

Before the last set of Updates, I was able to successfully get them. The
problem seems to have begun after the first slew of Microsoft Update updates.
I am using IE7, and I have lowered the security risk, allowed all popups,
even added microsoft update.com to my trusted sites. I tried a System Restore
to the day before my last successful updates, but that didn't help.

0x80070017 -2147024873 - ERROR_CRC
Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Clean out your temporary internet files.
0x80070017 relates to a Data error

If you need to reinstall the ActiveX controls (because they may have become corrupt):-

Follow this article -
The Windows Update Web site and the Microsoft Update Web site do not scan for updates when
you repair a failed installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 or of Windows XP Service
Pack 1

Thanks for your response. Your analysis of the CRC problem and data error was
correct ... a scan disk showed my hard disk is damaged and unable to read
certain sectors of the drive -- so I'm replacing the drive. Otherwise your
suggestions probably would have helped. Thanks again.
