it just does nothing when I got to click on that option, and if I tried to
delete thing manually I often get a pop-up error message that simply says
"an unknown error has occurred"
Has this happened to anyone else and if so, does anyone have advice on how
to fix it?
Many thanks in advance!

Try running the various repair functions in the WMUtil program:

If no improvement, upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

Hi;

First, go into Windows Mail, then Tools--> Options-->Advanced tab. Click
Maintenance then Store Folder; note where that folder is located.

Now close WM, open that folder in Explorer, then Local Folders. Delete the
"Deleted Items" folder (a new one will be created when you next start WM).

No idea if this will help or not, but if the issue is some kind of
file/folder corruption then this may give WM a fresh start. Open WM,
create a phony message to yourself and Save it (File/Save) then close it;
then open Drafts and delete that phony message. Now try emptying the
Deleted Items folder. Anything?

Hello Diane,

OPTION ONE in the tutorial below may be able to help you get rid of

Similar situation here. In drop down folder list, it's showing I have over
300 deleted messages in the deleted items folder. Right clicking or going to
the Edit drop down to "empty the deleted folder" gives me the message of "An
Unknown Error Has Occurred". However, when I actually open the deleted items
folder, it appears totally empty!
I've checked out many of these discussion posts looking for a solution and
tried a few fixes but none work, not even the positive sounding advice from
Gary VanderMolen.

Kindly limit posting to one thread per issue.
Multi-posting unnecessarily dilutes the available responder resources.
