I cannot enable Windows Aero.

I have an ASUS EAX1600PRO (ATI Radeon X1600 PRO GPU) with 512MB.

With RC1 I used the ATI Catalyst RC1 drivers; with RC2 I am using the
default MS drivers.

Everything works just fine...

You may wish to take into consideration that DirectX 10 cards are ante
portas... so it will be time next year;-)
