I purchased a laptop from Dell about 1 week ago and I cannot get any updates
to install, not even McAffee updates, or msn messenger. I always get an error
unknown publisher. I have been trying to research this issue, added them to
my trusted sites, installed certificates but have the same problem. I did
read that there is a 10- step process where I can rename, delete and add them
to the registry but what I want to know if this doesn't work then what? I
have Windows XP SP2. Had it on my desktop and NEVER had this problem.

thanks in advanced to ANYONE who can at least guide me in the right direction

What specific updates ... from whom? DO you download and then install from
the copy on your hard disk or are you trying to download/install directly
from the web? Do you have this problem with Microsoft Updates as well?

I'm sorry, i wasn't too clear. Yes, the updates are from MS. EVERYTHING I try
to update has an unknown publisher error. I have/am trying to get Dell to
help on this issue; somethings they referred me to MS.

I am getting the same error: Unable to Verify Publisher, but I can only
choose 'ok' and then the windows update cancels out. I tried changing my
security settings to be the lowest possible, but that doesn't effect it. I am
currently only using windows security with no firewall.

I have the same problem: Unable to Verify Publisher. And this is for Windows
Update accessed through Internet Explorer. I have lowered my security
settings (Only using windows security right now with no firewall). Any help?

These are all checked. Shall I uncheck something and retry?

Try this:

X Check for publisher's certificate revocation
Check for server ....
X Check for signature's ...
X Enable Integrated ....
X Warn about invalid site certificates

I also have both SSL checked with TLS off.

Since those are the default settings, I've been using that set up. I still
get the same error: Unable to Verify Publisher.
