Thanks to anyone for any real help.

I have a COMPAQ and as you are probably aware, Defender comes to be
unable to get updates although I am prompted to do so. Last month, I had
this problem and HP CHAT got me 'fixed' albeit over some 2 - 3 hours of back
and forth. Yesterday, I had to attempt the same thing but this time the Rep
was not as 'persistent.' Consequently, I am STILL unable to get Updates.

More importantly, is there a FINAL soultion to this continuing problem?
Using Reps is one thing but still at the end, I'd like to be able to handle
this on my own in the future. Present Error Code is: 0x80072efd. (And
"No," the MSN Website does nothing to help....

THANKS for any help and advice....

You could read this article, but you need to give a bit more information.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

What AV are you running? What version of Vista and is it 32 or 64 bit?
Have you run Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware? I'd suggest you download and
run both.

Always state your full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; WinXP 64-bit SP2;
Vista SP1; Vista 64-bit SP2; Win7; Win7 64-bit) when posting in a forum or
newsgroup. Please do so in your next reply.

Is this a sudden, new problem?

What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your
subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)?
What third-party firewall (if any)?

Has a(another) Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on the
computer (e.g., a free-trial version that came preinstalled when you bought
it)?
