I run windows XP home and for some time now when i try to use windows updater
i get the following message Files required to use Microsoft Update are no
longer registered or installed on your computer. To continue: it asks me
to Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended) and when i
do this it returns me to the Microsoft update home screen to start over again

Some have reported that simply re-registering the MSXML3.DLL seems to fix
the problem.
1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type: regsvr32 MSXML3.DLL
Press okay

If that hasn't helped you may need to re-registered some more files:

1. Click Start.
2. Choose Run.
3. In the Run box, type (pressing okay after each one) :-

net stop wuauserv

Repeat for the following:
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll
regsvr32 qmgr.dll
regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll

net start wuauserv

Ah, yes, just another of many reasons to hate WIndows and all things
MIcrosoft. If it weren't for the fact that they are so damn cheap I wouldn't
own one, but I can't afford a MAC, well worth the money though it is. What I
want to know is why do my updates keep disappearing on me. I don't have one
update that shows that it was installed before the last week of January, yet
I've updated since I bought this computer over two years ago. Then, when I
do tell it to update, it sits there like a bump on a log.

Just wanted to say thx. TaurArian, that command line "regsvr32..." did it
for me. I went round & round uninstalling the stuff I dwnld'd today (even
that msxml 4.0 >(. Just to give back a little I thought I'd offer up my sys
info, incase any1 sees any connection to this prob:

modest laptop-
Acer Aspire 3618AWLci
2 gigs DDR2
60 gig hd
hard 100 mbps
XP Home sp2-btw this is a preloaded recoverable os on sm. partition on hd.

Glad I did't have to copy all the files in but it would't have been that big
ofa deal. This was absolutely the fix to my updater prob, thx.

okay, maybe you can explain why time after time something like this happens.
Today I was trying to use the feature to check and see what VISTA my computer
is compatible with. First I had to dl the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor,
then when I tried to run it, it told me I needed to dl the MSXML 6.0 Parser
in order to use the Windows VIsta Upgrade Advisor. I did that, went back to
see which version of Vista my computer is compatible with, fell asleep
because it was looking, and looking, and looking, and looking, and the bar
hypnotized me until I fell asleep. When I awoke, it told me that the site
was busy and I should try later. I did. Still busy. Then I go to updates
and am told
that a high priority update is available and I should update
now. Guess what update it was. MSXML6.0...similar to how I dl'd XP SP2
when it was first available, and again a couple days ago when I was notified
that I should update to XP SP2, and again last njght when I was told to
update to XP SP2, which showed up in my update list 2 days ago, but was
mysteriously gone last night, and still doesn't appear in my updates list,
but I am told that I have installed the update for XP SP2. I imagine I'll be
told to dl the update tomorrow. It just amazes me how everything that goes
missing is a Microsoft/Windows update. All my software is here, All my
programs that I've had for over 2 years are up and running, but my updates
seem to disappear with some regularity.

Hi man56, there is absolutely no point in taking your frustration out on me.

I was responding to the original op johnn429 hoping that I could assist with
the problem he was having.

I'm sorry if it seemed that I was, but I really was not taking my frustration
out on you, but just pointing out another one of the many reasons that I get
so frustrated with Microsoft/Windows. I will be the first to admit that I
will continue to put up with this frustration because, let's face it, it's
cheap. For $450-$550, I can buy a brand new computer that is capable of
doing everything that I need a computer to do for me. There are just so many
little glitches that cause wasted time to be spent NOT doing what you have
the computer for in the first place, and then the icing on the cake is that
there isn't a simple way to just contact Microsoft to air your complaints.

Again, my apologies if it seemed as though I was directing my frustration at
you.

We all get frustrated with computers from time to time. I wish I could help you with your
problem but I can't at the moment.
Perhaps if you started a new thread, and calmly stated what was happening, there may be
someone out there that can assist or even explain what is happening.

If you're still running XP, use Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec...2/default.mspx

This will show what updates you actually have and what are needed and if any are missing.

To get the Upgrade Advisor
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

FAQ -
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro...deadvisor.mspx
To install and run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor, you will need:

a.. Administrator privileges

b.. .NET 2.0*

c.. MSXML6*
(http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en)

d.. 20 MB of free hard disk space

e.. An internet connection

* While installing the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor, it will detect if these components
are present. If not, it will provide a link to where they can be downloaded. They are
required to complete installation.

Actually, I did find a different thread that was more specific to updates, and
XP SP2 in particular. I'll just say this and then leave it at that. I really
do like the convenience of Windows, it just seems that lately, more than
before, there are more problems with it. Every single one of my updates from
the last almost 3 years just disappeared. In the last 5 days I have done
more than 70updates.
