Cannot have Manual startup type for Automatic Updates service?

Hi

I've been looking through past responses for the 0x8DDD0018 error which i
get if i try to have the Automatic Updates service set to Manual startup type.

It certainly solves the problem to set it back to Automatic and reboot. The
reason i wanted to set it to manual is because i am quite happy to run a
manual update check every week but i would prefer not to have it run a search
on its own every time i restart the machine! An even bigger annoyance is
having to wait several minutes while it does this every time i come out of
hibernation!! I can see the svhost service in Task Manager hogging up the CPU
when i just want to get cracking with work - i expect it takes longer than
some because i have so much Microsoft software to search through (SQL
Service, Office etc.). But when the startup type for Automatic Updates is
manual then i can start work right away...

It would appear that we simply cannot have it set to Manual? I would really
love to hear an explanation from someone of why the service cannot be started
manually?

Kind regards,
Richard

You don't need to have the service stopped and manually started in order to
accomplish what you want. All you have to do is go to Control Panel >
Automatic Updates and turn it off from automatically downloading and
installing. This way you don't even have to go in to start the service
before you go to the microsoft update site.
Hope this helps
