cannot install dotnetfx.exe

I have windows ME (don't even start). I cannot install the .NET Framework 1.1
SP1, so I followed someones advice and downloaded the 1.0 redistributable
(the 1.1 would not work for me). I downloaded and tried to install, but it
failed with the error message:
Error 1935. An error occured during the installation of assembly component
{F7B1ACC6-3906-4BC0-B2C7-D42F192C8C17} HRESULT: -2147319761.

When I close this window I get another one that says:
Microsoft .NET Framework (English)v1.0.3705 setup has ended prematurely. If
this persists contact Product Support.

I have tried 21 times (since October 2004) to install the service pack for
..Net framework, and all have failed. I cannot find the "product support" for
this service pack anywhere on the website, and each attempt leads me to a
problem that is similar to mine but not identical, so I do not want to try
the solutions, becuase I do not know if it WILL solve my problem.

I keep going through this forum looking for solutions, but keep failing. I
have .Net Framework 1.1 in my add/remove programs. Should I delete it and try
to re-install? Should I delete the dotnetfx.exe?
Can anyone help me??????

I do apologize that you have hit this problem. I recommend the following
steps:

1. Do not delete the dotnetfx.exe at first.
2. Yes, do use the Add/Remove Programs to uninstall .NET Framework 1.1
3. If you have the .NET Framework 1.0 in the Add/Remove programs, uninstall
it as well.
4. Now go to this link:

5. There are a number of things to do in the previous link. Do them all.
6. Install the .NET Framework 1.1 by going to the following link and
clicking the "Download" button:

7. Install the .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 by going to the following
link and clicking the "Download" button:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
8. Now go to Windows Update, and see if it all critical updates are
installed as they should be.
