Cannot Install Java

Vista Home Premium.

Yesterday morning, Java Updater advised that Version 6 Update 7 was
available.
I tried to install it, it hung at "Extracting Installer" in the Java
installer program.

Have disabled firewall/antivirus, etc., cannot install. Have tried
on-line installations in Firefox 3 and IE7, have tried off-line install,
they all hang at the same "Extracting Installer" indication.

The HP Recovery Manager will not reinstall the original Update 6
version.

Any clues as to what could be causing this frustrating problem?

Uninstall your current version of Java, then visit
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
and download, then install, the "offline" version
(filesize: 15.18 MB).

There is currently no version of Java installed on this computer:
Update 6 was removed, in accordance with instructions on a Sun Java
page, to try to remedy the problem.

I have previously downloaded and attempted to install the off-line
version, to no avail. In fact, a short while ago I ran CCleaner to get
rid of temp files, etc., and then, for the third or fourth time, tried
to install the off-line version of Java. The installer, as has been the
case since around 0500 yesterday, hung at "Extracting Installer."

I have now attempted to install Java at least a dozen times, in various
ways, and every single time, I get the "Extracting Installer" message
showing in the Java installer (both on- and off-line version), even when
I leave the installer running for well over thirty minutes.

Again, of course, thanks, followed by two questions:

1. I am on a 32-bit computer, so which version of the MS Installer do I
want? There seem to be both x86 and x64 versions that apply to Vista;
I'd guess the x86 one to be correct, but I'm tired of guessing games.

2. I ran the CCleaner Registry analyzer, which found two references to
Java, both "Installer Reference Issue", both of which were found in
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ins taller\Folders. The
first refers to Files\Java\jre1.6.0_06, the other ending in \bin. Is
there any possibilty that those two entries could be at least part of
the problem? (Incidentally, I tried to install a downloaded version of
Upate 6, which (of course...) stuck on "Extracting Installer."

If you have the 32-bit version of Windows Vista, then download the
Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x86.msu - 1.7 MB file

Note: Registry entries for "files\Java\jre1.6.0_06, the other ending in \bin"

can be safely deleted.

I installed the Installer update, restarted computer. I removed al
references to Java in the area of the registry referred to above

I then started the off-line Java Update 7 Installer. After it hung a
"extracting installer" for nearly thirty minutes, I once again ended th
process as well as zipper.exe (a file clearly used by the Jav
installation process.

I certainly appreciate your advice, so please don't for a moment thin
that I am blaming you when I state that I am totally frustrated. Thi
entire episode is absurd, has taken entirely too much of my time, etc

The frustration is certainly made worse when, having read on a Jav
help page on the Sun web site, that I should gather certain log file
pertaining to Java installation problems and send the file to a specifi
email address, only to find that their automatic demon rejects any an
all submissions that are not in reply to an email originated by Sun, an
also finding from a phone call that there is nothing I can do about thi
(other than pay them for a support subscrlption.) I have to question wh
Sun tells you to do something that is so meaningless

Megasigh.

Because they can. When you're the only legal supplier of a product you can
afford to be indifferent, just look at MS.

This can happen when an IE window is open somewhere...

Have you tried installing Java 6 instead of 7?

Thanks for replying.

No IE window opened, although I have tried an on-line install with
IE7--to no avail, of course.

Yes, I have tried installing Update 6, both on- and off-line, as well
as using HP's built-in Recovery Manager, which tries to reinstall Update
6 (the version that came with the computer); no luck, anywhere.

I got a phone call yesterday from one of the HP technical support
people who had been trying (and trying very hard, at that) to help me
solve the problem. He asked if I had had any success; when I said "no,"
he asked a few questions, then said he would do some research and call
me back within an hour. That he did not call again indicates to me that
the problem is truly an odd one that is not easily figured out.

At this time, I can only hope that either someone on-line comes up with
the `magic' needed to solve this, or that a second-tier technical
support person at HP is able to figure out what is causing the
difficulty, or is able to get either or both MS and Sun to do so.
