I am having problems installing these updates (KB916281 and KB917344), they
have been downloaded and trying to be installed almost every day, and they
always fail using both Windows Automatic Updates and the Windows Update site.

When I try through the update site I get the following error:
Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being
downloaded or installed
Solution: To fix the problem, try installing the updates again. If that
doesn't work, use the Troubleshooter to try solve the problem.

Microsoft Windows XP x64 Edition
Security Update for Windows XP x64 Edition (KB917344)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer for Windows XP x64 Edition
(KB916281)

I am using Windows XP Pro x64 2003 SP1.

Can anyone offer any advice on what I can do to sort this out?

TIA,
Paul

Ditto: WinXP automatic & I manually have not been able to instal this update
some 20 tries over the week.

ERROR: 0x8007F0F4

The Automatic Online help fails because Windows blocks its own Active X
feature (Warning to leave site immediately because of unsafe Activer X
content)!

This is a critical update to IE and yet persistently fails -- and the Help
options, too.

Moderator: Please inform of Fix.

Please disable all third-party anti-virus, anti-malware, and firewall
products. Enable Windows Firewall for your protection to replace any
third-party firewall. Now try to install the updates again. Does that
solve your problem? Please report back.

Please disable all third-party anti-virus, anti-malware, and firewall
products. If necessary, enable Windows Firewall to replace any third-party
firewall. Now try the updates again. Does that solve your problem? Please

Hi Robin,

Thanks for your reply.

I tried as you suggested and disabled Avast Anti-Virus to install the
updates but got the same result.

Any other ideas?

TIA
Paul

The next step is to identify the reason for the failure to install each
time. Send Internet Explorer to the Microsoft Update site, and click to
display your update history. Locate the failed updates, then click on the
"Failed" red cross icon in the Status column to get a popup with an error
code. Let us know the error code.

Other places to look for clues as to the failure reason are:
C:\WINDOWS\KB916281.log
C:\WINDOWS\KB917344.log

Thanks again Robin,

On the updates site it shows as cancelled, but when the update stopped it
said that the update failed.

I have pasted just the first and last 3 blocks of KB916281.log below as
there was quite a lot of lines there that were almost identical.

Thanks for your help.

Do you have, or have you ever had, IE7 installed?

Hi Robin,

I did try to install the beta version a month or so ago, but the installer
said it was unable to install so no changes were made. I just gave up on
installing that to wait until the final release came out.

I have just checked and it is not showing in add/remove programs either.
