I've tried 6 times to install the latest update "Update for Background
Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773)", both
from AutoUpdate and from the Windows website. All times it fails with the
following message in the update log:

"Installation Failure
Error Code: C0000006
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following
resources."

Cannot find any reference to error code C0000006 for Windows Update - any
clues?

Hi,
What is the OS/Service pack level on the machine?
Do you see any disk related errors in the system event log (you can open
event log by typing eventvwr.msc in Start->Run)

One suggestion to try is,
open a command and type the following commands
* net stop wuauserv
* rd /s /q %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download
* net start wuauserv

Please go to Windows Update and try to install the update again.
If the error repeats again, please post the contents of
C:\windows\KB842773.log
C:\windows\WindowsUpdate.log (no space in the file name)

I am having the exact same problem. Same error codes.
Same event log message and everything. Can't figure it
out and I am having similar problems with other program
installations.

I did that, and when executed it failed with the error dialog "Setup
error"/"Installation did not complete".
I tried it again from Safe Mode - with the same result.

I see when looking through the forums that this appears to be a common
problem update - there are also a load of queries in Servers-Windows
Server/IIS/Windows Update :-(

Any further suggestions??

There was no such file created.
in c:\windows\windowsupdate.log, only two lines were appended:

2004-08-30 00:53:58+1000 3712 6fc Trying to make out of proc datastore active
2004-08-30 00:53:58+1000 3712 6fc Out of proc datastore is now active

If KB842773.log is not present, it usually indicates that your machine has
some malware (virus/Trojan/spyware) causing problems with the installation
of patches.
Does your computer have anti-virus and is it up to date? Please run a scan
on your machine.

* If you don't have anti-virus software, Microsoft provides free anti-virus
software that can be used for 1 year from
http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/

If the scan shows that there are viruses/Trojans, please clean them up and
try the install again.

I use ZoneAlarm as a firewall, and a constantly updating TrendMicro
PC-cillin as a virus checker, which scans my entire system every week. No
problem ever found except with the odd attachment which it successfully
detects and bins, as it should.
