Cannot install needed update# KB938126

I have Vista Ultimate 64 bit with SP1. In order for Windows Media Center to
work with my Linksys DMA2100 Media Extender I MUST install Windows Update
KB938126

I looked in the list of Installed Updates under Windows Update in Control
Panel. KB938126 in NOT in the list.

I downloaded the x64 version of KB938126 from Microsoft and ran it, it gives
me a message "this update does not apply to your system."

For grins I also downloaded the x86 version of update KB938126 and it also
says "this update does not apply to your system."

How do I get this update to install?

I am trying to install free updates I have windows xp home edition, it has
never been updated. I am not acqainted with technology really I want to
install norton 360, but it is telling me I need level 2 none of what I do
will work

You need to install something called Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2. It
is a compilation of all the updates released by Microsoft for XP as of about
July of 2004.

Before any other updates from Microsoft will install, you MUST this install
XP service pack 2 download it here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
it is rather large - if you have a dial-up connection it could take you a
day or two to download it..... Even though this says "network installation
for IT professionals" it is what you want for your home PC.

Once you install this Service Pack 2 update, Microsoft will give you all the
latest XP updates. However, Microsoft will NOT give you any updates until
you have this Service Pack 2 installed. Their idea is, "Hey, this was
released 4 years ago- ALL users ought to have this by now!"

By the way you posted your question as an ANSWER to my question about WMC
KB938126, and I can;t help but notice you didn't say anything relevant to
KB938126. You should have posted a NEW THREAD, not an answer to an existing
question. Just FYI.

You may want to aks in one of the Vista newsgroups whether KB938126 is
included in SP1 and/or if KB938126 is compatible with SP1. It may be
neccessary to uninstall SP1, install KB938126 and reinstall SP1 after-
wards.
