I recently tried to install TaxCut 97 but it would not install. It said I
need a newer version of windows installer. I downloaded the latest Windows
Installer but I get this error message when I try to run the update
"kb893803v2 setup error". I have never before had any problems installing a
program, this is a first and very frustrating. I have copied the contents of
the kb893803v2 folder and will post them below. Any help would be hugely
appreciated. Thanks!

Edit: I tried to post the contents of the file with this post but it said it
was to long, 79,328 when the limit is 30,000. Any suggestions?

That is probably the combined logs of all your attempts to install it.
Just the last instance might be enough. Otherwise the first and last instance.
would probably do it. Often there is a distinctive separator between each
logging instance. You may be able to see that a row of ==== (or some such
allows you to find the end of one or the beginning of the next.

This error is most likely caused by one of the following conditions:

1. The Windows Update Temporary folder is corrupted.
2. Windows Update Agent 3.0 is not installed properly.

We can perform the following steps to troubleshoot this issue. After trying
each suggestion, please go to the Windows Update site to check the result.
Thanks for your cooperation.

NOTE: Some third party programs can also affect the Windows Update service.
If you are running any third party applications such as Spyblocker, Internet
or web accelerators (programs designed to boost the speed of the Internet
connection), security or anti-virus programs (Norton, McAfee, etc.), I
recommend we temporarily disable or shut them down and then try accessing the
Windows Update site later. Please be sure to enable them again after
completing the update process.

Suggestion 1: Clean up Windows Update temporary folder
===========================================
1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the open window.

Net stop WuAuServ

2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
3. In the open folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold.
4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command in the open window.

Net start WuAuServ

Suggestion 2: Reinstall Windows Update Agent 3.0
======================================
1. Visit the following link and download Windows Update Agent 3.0 to the C:\
(Choose Save, click My Computer on left panel, Click C:\, Click Open and
Click Save)

http://download.windowsupdate.com/Wi...gent30-x86.exe

2. Click Start, Click Run and copy the following command to the panel:

C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

Note: There is a space between "C:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" and
"/wuforce".

Best Regards,

Calven

This is not enough detail to know precisely how to avoid the symptom.
There is a permissions problem in your registry. Things you could try
to identify it would be to see if there is any more detail in the Event Viewer,
or try running the update manually with a /verbose switch on the command
line. The best diagnostic would be to supplement whatever diagnostics
the update can provide with all the associated file and registry accesses
by running ProcMon and correlating those trace entries with the trace
entries of the writes for those log entries.

FWIW here is what I have in my log (for OS XPsp2) at the same point:

<extract>
20.880: Num Ticks for Reg update and deleting 0 size files : 131
20.890: ---- Old Information In The Registry ------

20.910: ---- New Information In The Registry ------
20.910: Source:F:\WINDOWS\system32\_000111_.tmp.dll (3.0.3790.2180)
20.910: Destination:
24.014: UpdateSpUpdSvcInf: Source [ProcessesToRunAfterReboot] section is empty; nothing to do.
24.014: IsRebootRequiredForFileQueue: f:\windows\system32\msisip.dll was no-delay replaced; reboot is required.
24.014: IsRebootRequiredForFileQueue: f:\windows\system32\msimsg.dll was no-delay replaced; reboot is required.
24.014: IsRebootRequiredForFileQueue: f:\windows\system32\msihnd.dll was no-delay replaced; reboot is required.
24.014: IsRebootRequiredForFileQueue: f:\windows\system32\msiexec.exe was no-delay replaced; reboot is required.
24.014: IsRebootRequiredForFileQueue: f:\windows\system32\msi.dll was no-delay replaced; reboot is required.
24.014: DoInstallation: A reboot is required to complete the installation of one or more files.

</extract>

Calven's suggestion might at least get you some different symptoms,
hopefully more precise. You could run ProcMon to help supplement
those diagnostics too.

Hi Calven
I tried your first suggestion about cleaning up the update folder. I then
went back to try and install the Windows Installer3 but no luck. I tried to
click on the link you gave for suggestion 2 but it would not load, cannot
find the server. Any other suggestions? Thanks for all your help so far.

Ok I may be sounding like I don't know anything about computers but... I
don't know how to manually install a program. I saved the file to my desktop
but only know how to install it using a wizard.

I have not paid all of my taxes for the year 2008 yet so I need to do my
taxes for the fiscal year 2007, the last complete year I have paid taxes. I
am using WindowsXP SP2. I have never had a problem installing anything until
Taxcut07 and have installed each years Taxcut prior to this. The last post
told me to manually install it but this I have never had to do. Any help
would be appreciated.
