Cannot install security updates

I have repeatedly tried to install the latest security updates but
installation fails every time. No reason is given for the failure, no
suggestions are offered. There is just a question mark next to the "fail"
shield. I am using XP SP2, Office 2003.

Go to Start > Run > type in [or, copy and paste]

Click OK
Copy & paste the last 50 or so lines into your reply, please.

Dear MowGreen
I am having the same problem and just read your info - may I send you the
info you are explaining here below even though I am not the person who asked
the original question??

installed: WS xp professional, version 2002, serv.pack 2
antivirus: Zone Alarm + friewall + antivirus (which I just uninstalled in
the hope that it would solve the security update problems)

Is the below the last entry in the WU.log ? :

There have been issues with the ZoneAlarm security suite in regards to
accessing/downloading/installing updates from the MS update sites, but
none that I know of that affect Automatic Updates.

Did you reenable the native Windows Firewall ?

NEVERTHELESS THE CUSTOM DOWNLOADES (8 SOFTWARE + 2 HARDWARE) THAT I WANTED

ON JULY 01 I UNINSTALLED ZONE ALARM/FIREWALL/ANTIVIRUS COMPLETELY (BECAUSE I
HEARD, THAT IT MIGHT BE THE CULPRIT) AND TRIED 2X TO INSTALL THE UPDATES W/
RESTART, BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. I WAS TOO WORRIED TO GET A VIRUS AND
RE-INSTALLED ZONE ALARM AGAIN.

MY LAPTOP RUNS OTHERWISE SMOOTH, I AM JUST WORRIED, THAT NOT GETTING THE
LATEST WS UPDATES MIGHT JEOPARDIZE THE SYSTEM AND/OR LACK BEHIND - WHAT DO
YOU THINK??

ps: BY READING ALL THE BLOGS, I SEE THAT I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS
ISSUE - LOOKS LIKE THIS BUG SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY MS REAL SOON!

Did you type in this command or copy and paste it ?

%windir%\windowsupdate.log

Where did you view the "automated update history ", please ?

The system has the latest round of Security updates already installed.
As to the Custom Downloads ... NEVER download Hardware updates from
Windows Update. If there is an issue with any hardware visit the
manufacturer's web site for the latest drivers.
If there is no issue with hardware ... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Now, back to the ZoneAlarm Security Suite ... it appears that it's
preventing the system from making successful downloads from Windows
Update. Not being familiar with it, recommend that you visit their
Forums and post on how to resolve issues with accessing Windows Update.
