cannot install SP2.

I tried to install SP2 on my computer I bought from a guy but everytime I try
to install it stops and says that my license key may be false. I went to
microsoft's "HowToTell" and went to validate my windows and it says its
genuine. Does that mean something different than product key. I am not sure.
Please Help if you can.

Assuming it's Win XP, when you bought the machine did it have a Win XP serial
number sticker on the system or did you get the sticker and CD with the
system? If you didn't get either, there's a chance that your Win XP copy is
illegal.

If you do have the sticker, you can find utilities on the Internet to
compare the number on the sticker with what was actually installed.

I had one case [not saying it's like yours] where a lazy ass company decided
to dump on a pirated copy of Windows XP even though they attached a
legitimate serial number so that they can duplicate the installation faster.
[Win XP had to be re-installed because you can't change a volume license
number with an OEM.]

I'm hoping that when you got the system at least it had a fresh installation
of Windows....

Once you know if the number you have is legitimate you can then contact MS
support. You don't [obviously] want to give them a pirated number.
