Automatic updates has downloaded this update for me but it will not install,
despite several attempts. I have tried downloading and installing manually
but get an Error 1305: cannot read file. I cannot provide an error number for
the installation itself as, when I click on the red update failed icon in
Update history, nothing happens. Windows update log states: Update NOT
required for C:\Windows\System32\wups.dll. Any help wold be gratefully
received as I am continually prompted to install this update.

I will repost a solution that has helped many people and was originaly posted
by Oscar on 2/15/06. There have been some problems reported with steps 4 or
5, this was usually resolved by continuing with the remaining steps and if
still having the original problem to rerun the procedure once again. Hope
this helps - Charlie
Repost Begins Below:

Well guys after 4 hours of messing with this I can tell you what worked for
me. With any luck it can guide you too.

1. Download Windows Install Clean-Up program at
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;290301 and install.
(You can find it in the programs section of your start menu after install)

2. Download .net framework 1.1 (file name dotnetfx.exe) at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en (dont install yet)

3. Download .net service pack 1 (file name NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe) at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en (dont install yet)

4. Run Windows Clean-Up and remove the defective .net framework, Reboot.

5. Go to the start menu, then run. Type in "msconfig" and set it to
Diagnostic and then reboot to prevent other software from getting in the way
of the install.

6. Run dotnetfx.exe for a fresh new .net install

7. Run NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe, it will prompt that its already
installed, do it anyways.

8. Go back to msconfig and set it back to normal, reboot.

9. Run the regular windows update thru website or automatic service.

It should now do the update that previously resulted in errors. Good luck!
