Cannot install updates error number is 80240020

Hi Everyone

I'm using windows xp home edition, patched, supposedly and according to the
last "successful update" on 16 June 2005. Since Then, I haven't thought of
updating my OS until Today when I used the windows update feature to run a
fast and quick update.

Now, what happens is, the windows update website required me to install a
number of critical updates first like • Windows Genuine Advantage Validation
Tool (KB892130)
Update for Windows XP (KB898461

Anyhow, I began downloading the files, and after they were downloaded
completely, They failed to install, and that's it. No message no nothing. So
I had to lookup what's wrong with that. I came to this newsgroup, and almost
tried all of the possible solutions, from registering some .dll files ,to
changing the name of the Catroot directory, to cleaning the datasotore
directory under the software distribution directory but of no avail. So I
decided to post my problem, along with the last portion of the

Can someone please help me with this problem. Cause I almost had enough.

This is the same exact error message I was getting yesterday. I resolved it
by doing an overlay of the operating system.

Have you tried messing with the permissions within the registry?

How did you do your overlay? I'm getting this EXACT error message too.
Did you have to disable anything or lose your data? reply to list, email
is spaminated
