Solution courtesy of Ed, try this it worked for me as well.
Here are the steps I took:
1) Run DCOMCNFG
2) Click the "Default Security" tab
3) Click the "Edit Default..." button for "Default Access Permissions"
4) Add the local Administrators group (there was only one user listed
before)
5) Click "Apply"
Windows Updates worked worked like a charm after that!
