I have tried most of the "fixes" from this forum - with no results. I am
updating a WINDOWS XP. I have removed "bots" from here - if that helps. The
machine has NORTON AV running on it now and I've found and removed got all
the bots.

When I UPDATE windows, it tries to install again, I did this a few months
ago, the WIN VALIDATOR first. I get THIS" The following updates were not
installed. Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130)

SO HELLLPPPP - I think this is a clue to something else going on, but what?
Thanx for your help, i've worked on this for over 2 weeks now.
thanx,

1. Please click the link below and download this tool:
http://www.ecs-safe.com/Reset_subinacl.zip

2. Save the file to your desktop.
3. Right-click the Reset_subinacl.ZIP file and choose Extract.
4. Follow the instructions and there will be two files (reset.cmd and
subinacl.exe)
5. Double-click the reset.cmd file
6. You will see a DOS-like window processing.

(NOTE: It may take several minutes, please be patient. When it is finished,
you will be prompted that "Finished, press any key to continue")

After completing the above steps, please refer to the Windows Update website
to install the WGA tool again. If it still cannot be installed, let's move on
to the steps below to manually install it.

Step 2: Install the WGA engine manually
===========================
1. Download the ActiveX cab file from the following link and then save it to
the Desktop:
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...eckControl.cab

Open the downloaded cab file and we will find the following two files:

LegitCheckControl.dll
LegitCheckControl.inf

2. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "%windir%\system32" (without
quotations) and press Enter. Copy the LegitCheckControl.dll files into the
opened System32 folder.

3. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "REGSVR32 LegitCheckControl.dll"
(without the quotations) and press Enter. You will see a pop-up message stating
this process succeeded.

4. Click "Start", click "Run", type: "inf" (without quotations) and press
Enter. Copy the LegitCheckControl.inf file into the opened inf folder.

5. Right-click on the copied LegitCheckControl.inf file in the inf folder,
and then choose Install. The WGA engine will be installed automatically.

After completing the above steps, please restart the computer and try to
validate Windows again.

Thanks much Carey ... I downloaded the reset_subinacl and ran it (several
minutes) and then KB892130 installed with no trouble ... now to restart and
all should be OK.

THANX CAREY FRISCH... but it DID NOT work.
Sigh... this is a real frustrator.
I DL's and ran both of your suggestions. After all that, it runs as it did
before.

Namely: update - pick updates to install (several offered) whatever one I
pick, it runs for a moment (no validator even being used - my home puter asks
and checks each time, this one seems to NOT check) then after the Download
of whatever update I pick, the screen says:
Updates were unable to be successful. The following updates were not
installed then it lists whatever I downloaded.

SO =-= Now what? Somehow it feels like it has a BAD VALIDATOR stuck in
there that won't get updated, or removed. HELPPPPP - as it's a long drive
out here and these folx think I'm crazy taking so long to fix this.

I have run every utility possible, and the BASELINE SECURITY also agrees =-=
that something is amiss with the UPDATOR utility.

I guess that old malware did some damage and I cant' get past it.
Thanx for the next supportful post here. I'll let you know as soon as it
WORKS again.

ALSO - if this is any help, I can't see ANY of the network anywhere except
in the SELECT PRINTER area. Weird, eh?

thanx,

I've done EVERYTHING in this post and STILL IT WON'T INSTALL!!!!!

WU says that WGA is already downloaded and needs installation, but, IT WON'T
INSTALL!!

I finally bumped into this post, "I had the same problem as well till i
search it in the pc using windows geniue in the file box. right click genuine
validation and click on update, that should work. I had the same problem as
well till i search it in the pc using windows geniue in the file box. right
click genuine validation and click on update, that should work."

IT WORKED!

Do as the post says, it's the "Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool" in
c:\windows\Downloaded Program Files

SPOKE TOO SOON... The update worked fine, and WU finally gets to list other
files to upgrade. Downloaded OK, but ALL FOUR FAILED TO INSTALL!

UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

NOW WHAT???????

The contents of your DataStore folder may be the problem.

1. Delete the contents of the DataStore folder.
2. Click Start.
3. Choose Run.
4. In the Run box, type: %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
5. Click OK.
6. Open the DataStore folder.
7. Delete all contents of the DataStore folder.
8. Close the window.
9. Reboot and revisit the Windows Update web site.

I had the same problem you are describing, and none of the suggested fixes
worked. How about this idea... validate your copy of Windows on the
Microsoft website. http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/dow.../Validate.aspx
I did that and it allowed me to use Microsoft Update. Best wishes.
