Just to be clear I am not sure if (2008) and 8.5 are the same. I received a
message that a newer versin was available and followed the upgrade
instructions and received the following:

================================================== ===
Checking your computer for Windows Live programs. This may take a few minutes.
================================================== ===

Then it tries to upgrade and fails:

================================================== ===
Sorry, we couldn't install this program.

Installed Start Mail Done

Not installed Messenger Get help
with this

To try to fix the problem, click 'Try again later' and we'll add the inst
your desktop so you can easily restart it later

Try again later
================================================== ===

I uninstalled the current version and downloaded the new version (2008)
from Microsoft. Received the same message - could not install... try later

================================================== ===
I downloaded version 8.1 and it installed without issue. I then tried to do
the upgrade to (2008) - same error message - could not install ...try later
================================================== ===
I noticed some post had a download loation for version 8.5 (again not sure
if this is the same as version 2008)

Receive the below error when trying to install.

================================================== ===
A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file:
C:\MSN\Install_{508CE775-4BA4-4748-82DF-FE28DA9F03B0}.msi
================================================== ===

I tried downloading the file again and installing - received the same
network error message.

I am running XP SP3 / Office 2007 SP1 / IE7

I saw some posts on Google abount regeristing a dll which I did successfully
- no help.

Application Event viewer for Windows 2008 installs show the following error:

==================================================
The description for Event ID ( 5000 ) in Source ( WindowsLiveSetup )
cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry
information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote
computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this
description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is
part of the event: wlsetupdiagnostic, windows live messenger,
8.5.1302.1018, oninstallend_ 0x8007065b, 12.0.1471.1025, NIL, NIL,
NIL, NIL, NIL, NIL.
==================================================
Message when installing version 8.5:

==================================================
Product: Windows Live Messenger -- Error 1316. A network error occurred
while attempting to read from the file:
C:\MSN\Install_{508CE775-4BA4-4748-82DF-FE28DA9F03B0}.msi
================================================== =

Any help appreciated!

Greetings,

Yes 2008 = 8.5. The Windows Live Installer has a number of issues. Instead, try installing
directly from the MSI from here:

Nice to know I am not alone. I also am running on 8.1 (which installed fine)
- but would like to try the new release - if I can ever get it installed! I
run Vista in the office - maybe I will see if I can upgrade there.

As for XP SP3 at home - stuck in the mud.

Have you noticed if your updates are not being installed successfully from
Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates either?

In any case, I suggest you to look at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
and follow the instructions described in "Method 1: Register the Wups2.dll
file in Windows"

and then try to install your live messenger again.

I hope this helps. At least it worked for me.

Hello guys,

I did a fresh installation of MS Win XP Home Edition, including SP 3 and all
avalaible updates TODAY (at night 02nd to 3rd July 2008) - used the
installation files provided by Jonathan Kay... all well done without problems
!

I had no Live Msg installed before, and I "deactivated" the implemented Win
Messenger that comes with XP (System Panel -> Software -> 3rd topic from top
at left menu bar).

Don`t know, which problems you have, but with me it works...

Best Regards and Good Luck @ all !

nayss
