Cannot install Windows Installer 3.1

I have just upgraded my PC from XP home to XP professional (to set up remote
access)

I initially had a problem with IE, which I have now solved by upgrading to
IE7.

Now I have a problem with installing any updates - the windows installer has
downloaded OK, but refuses to install. Error 0x80070005

I have looked through previous suggestions in the forum including the
download of SubInACL which is supposed to work - permission issues? But my PC
will not run the download.....

Any suggestions please? (Please give solutions in easy to follow steps -

Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft
Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP
installation:

NB: Also applies to clean installs, upgrade installs, and Recovery installs.

Thanks PA, but I'm afraid it did not work....

Opened link to kb/943144 as suggested, and followed method 1.
In step 2b did not receive any verification message.
Restarted update service and downloaded Installer 3.1
Would not install

Back to square one!

Any new suggestions please?

Just as a follow up to my earlier post - I seem to have moved on just a
little, but not to a complete conclusion.

At the moment I have the Installer 3.1 waiting to be installed in my
taskbar. When I try now the screen shows "Initialize installation - Done!"
and then the progress indicator runs completely to the end, but then the same
message - Installation failed.

However, at this point, instead of getting an error code the computer simply
asks me to re-start, as though the installation was successful. (there is no
error code)

When I re-boot the icon simply re-appears in the task bar, continually
asking me to re-start the computer. At least I have stopped the automatic
re-booting, but it is still really annoying....

Any advice based on this new information?
