Hi,
I am currently setting up a domain running Windows Server 2003 SP2 and am
getting the following error message when attempting to join the domain:

The domain name burace17 might be a NetBIOS domain name. If this is the
case, verify that the domain name is properly registered with WINS.

If you are certain that the name is not a NetBIOS domain name, then the
following information can help you troubleshoot your DNS configuration.

An error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV)
resource record used to locate a domain controller for domain burace17.

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)

The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.burace17

For more information, click Help.

Here is the results from ipconfig /all on the DC:

When I enable Routing and Remote Access I get ERROR_TIMEOUT.
This DC was not upgraded from any OS. I have setup domains in the past with
different computers and have had no issues (is this error because the DC is
on wireless?) I'm not very experienced with AD and DNS so sorry if I'm asking
stupid questions.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Blair,

The domain controller should not use DHCP address, use a fixed one and make
sure it is registered correct in the DNS servers zone. Also make sure that
the router is not running DNS server services, even it is not configured
for the clients. Additional disable DHCP on the router and use the server
for DHCP.

Did you try to join the domain with the FQDN instead of the NetBIOS name?

Best regards

I would disable IPv6 on your client machine, you said it was XP? I don't
even know how to get the IPv6 stack loaded let alone disabled. Why did you
load this, was there a reason for it?

Also as Meinolf said don't dhcp enable a DC, that is a really bad idea.

I agree with Paul that IPv^ should be uninstalled on the XP machine. By
default it does not come with it enabled and takes a few steps to install it
manually. Curious why it was installed? Was the XP Networking Pack
installed?

Overview of the Advanced Networking Pack for Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817778

To completely disable IPv^ on XP, take a look at this:
http://www.ipv6style.jp/en/tryout/20030120/2.shtml

and this:

Windows XP stop responding when connected to the Internet
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555059

As for RRAS on a DC, it is not advised and will cause additional headaches
and problems.
