You might try using the direct download point for Windows XP SP2.
SP2 is available at the Microsoft Download Center (please disregard the IT
Professionals and Developers portion of this, as it will run on an
individual computer as well: (266 MB)

Save it to your hard drive, but uncheck the box "Close when download is
complete", so that you can execute it the moment the download finishes.
As the download goes, empty the temp directory:
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type: %temp%
4. Click OK
5. When this folder opens, type <Ctrl>+<A> to select everything
6. Type the <Del> key to delete everything in this folder. Confirm that
yes, you wish to delete these files.
7. Close this window
In the Internet Explorer window:
1. Click Tools
2. Click Internet Options
3. On the General Tab, click Delete Files
4. On the Delete Files window, check the "Delete all offline content"
5. Click Delete
6. Close the window when finished
Go back to the download dialog:
1. Click Open when the download is complete
2. Follow the prompts to install
3. DO tell the wizard that you wish to create a backup.
