Hmmm - most strange!
I can reproduce this here, also - and it surprised the heck out of me! (even
with Office 2k3 installed, XP's WordPad is still unable to open an ME-saved
WordPad 'Word 6 .DOC' file)

One option (assuming you have no version of Office handy) is to reopen the
files on the ME box, and save them as RTF files (not a good option, I know)
which XP's WordPad can then open
If you only need to READ the files, rather than edit them, then you can use
the Word Viewer - from here

He doesn't have Word to install, Carey - he used WordPad to create the files
(for some reason that was the default file format for WordPad in ME)!

Like I said - if you only need to read the files, then use the Word Viewer
otherwise, maybe get into eBay and see if you can get hold of a cheap copy
of Word , or Office 95??

......Ahhh! - found it!!!
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870883

it IS possible!!
