Cannot login OS after Automatic update

I am looking for the way to troubleshoot below issue.

Automatic update was run on IBM Thinkpad T43 w/ Win XP Professional.
After update is completed and the machine rebooted with Safe Mode and the
account/password doesn't work on Windows login page. With Ctrl + Alt + Del,
the log in prompt doesn't show 'Log on to' dropdown anymore. There weren't
any error during the update.
