Cannot make IE8 my default browser

I have tried to set it within and without IE8 (through the control panel &
app), reset the associated file extension, default programs, etc. I cannot
make IE8 my default browser. I am using Vista Business. I have loaded
Chrome and Firefox to take the default and try to reassign with no luck.
Strangly, Internet Exporer is not located under "Set Default Programs" in
the left hand column nor is it available in "Set Associations" in the
"Protocal" section. When I choose change in that section, only FF & Chrome
are listed as options for the FTP, HTTP & HTTPS.
Please help.

"Change Your Default Web Browser" - Vista Help

Note: If you have used a registry cleaner or followed advice to
'optimize' your system, all bets are off.

Hello,

If nothing else works out, you may want to try a uninstall / reinstall of
IE8

Hi,
First...
Try ie8-rereg from
http://iefaq.info/index.php?action=a...133&artlang=en

Then... What third-party security/antivirus/antispyware programs are
installed? Were any of these running when IE8 was installed?

Why? Shouldn't they be?
IEBlog IE7 Installation and Anti-Malware Applications:

Is a Norton or McAfee security program installed? Was a trial version
installed in the past?

Don,
Thanks for the tips. I tried to re-register the dll files using that tool,
but it gave me a line ERROR:

IEREREG Version 1.07 for IE8 27.03.2009
by Kai Schaetzl http://iefaq.info
installs and registers (if suitable) all DLLs known to be used by IE8.
should only take a few seconds, but please be patient

registering IE files
registering system files
correcting bugs in the registry
ERROR: Access is denied.
all tasks have been finished

Press any key to continue . . .

I checked my security profile and I have all of the necessary rights as well
as I ran the script using "run as admin". Maybe I have to change the rights
on each dll?

I originally did have Norton 360 enabled when I upgraded to ie8, but
uninstalled and re-installed w/ disabled.

Hi,
I would enable the Windows Firewall (Control Panel> Windows Firewall) then
uninstall Norton 360 *and* run the removal tool from
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039
Then, uninstall and reinstall IE8.
Then reinstall Norton 360.
