Cannot Open Backup File

I just did a complete Backup of my C: Drive into my newly Formatted MyBook.
I used Vista Restore and backup GUI from Control Panel==>System And
maintenance==>Backup Your Computer==>

It ended up in one file files, although it may not be backup related:
MediaID and 2 folders:

(1) Backup &
(2) Catalog

In Catalog I found two files:

(1) BackupGlobalCatalog (5.21 Kb) &
(2) GlobalCatalog (5.58 Kb)

Questions:

What is Global Catalog?
How can I open any of the files to take a look inside?
