Cannot open files following update

I recently downloaded Service Pack and .NET version 1.1 updates. Since then,
when I attempt to open Word files, I get message that this can't be done and
to insert disk to allow installation. I have been to Add/Remove Programs but
cannot see listing of either update (if this has caused the problem).

Microsoft does this to check that you really own a copy of MS Word. Put in
the Word/Office discs when prompted and you should be fine.
