I cannot open MS Word files on my HP iPAQ RX3115 PDA using my work computer.
I want to hook up my PDA to my work computer. I want to add text or delete
text in MS Word files on my PDA.

This is the situation. I have my partnership on my vista box at home (my
main computer) that I sync my PDA to. I sync files, contacts, and calendar.
It works great. I then decided I want to access my files on my PDA at work.
I installed ActiveSync 4.5 on my computer (MS XP Pro box) at work. I do not
want to sync work computer to PDA, just access MS Word files and change
text. I hook up PDA to work computer. ActiveSync connects to my PDA and
asks if I want a partnership or a guest. I chose guest. ActiveSync opens
and is "Connected". So far so good. I open a folder I want and see the
files I want. Double click on the file I want as I normally do to open the
file. The file will not open. It opens up the "Properties" window of the
file as if I right clicked the file and clicked properties. I right click
the file and it does not give me the "Open" option it normally does.

I am so close to accessing my files. Why can't I access them?

I assume if I set up a partnership that my files will be on my work
computer. I do not want to have copies of my personal files on my work
computer.

How do I accessing my PDA files on my work computer?

Background info: I have a AMD 4400+ 64X2 4GB memory 320GB HD(way bigger than
I need) Acer computer (AM3100-U3201A) I purchased new February 2008 running
32-bit MS Vista Home Premium SP1 box. I check for MS auto updates very
frequently. I think it has onboard shared memory for video and sound. I
use Quest DSL 1.5mb service with modem direct to computer. No switches or
routers or wireless or any other networking hardware.

My work computer is a Dell OPTILEX GX 260 - MS XP Pro Ver. 5.1 SP2 box. It
is not networked to anything, not even a phone line. The box stands
completely alone, unattached.

HP iPAQ RX3115 - Samsung S3c2440 Processor
Windows Mobile 2003 second edition version 4.21.1088 (build 14235.2.0.0)
(I sync it to my 32bit Vista box at home.)

Thanks for the help

Bob

This is an easy one. There is a significant difference between Vista/WMDC
and XP/AS. None of us can double click a file in the AS window on an XP box
and open the file. We never could. The process was, drag the file out of the
'folder' and onto the desktop make the changes, and drag it back. Honestly
don't recall if the drag results in a move or copy anymore, so watch that.

To be honest, I think Vista sort of does that for you in the background, but
to a temp location, and you don't notice it. The relationship between the
storage space on a Windows Mobile device and the PC has never really been a
USB drive like relationship. It is made to look like it in explorer, but it
is not the same.

Thank You for your quick answers. I will pull the files I want to change
off my PDA and put them on the XP box. Then make the changes. Then put
them back on my PDA. I hope it will sync okay on my Vista box when I get
home.

Should, if you change the name you will wind up with a new copy. If you
don't change the name, AS/WMDC just looks at last saved dates to determine
the most recent copy and that one will be kept across both platforms. I have
to believe that moving the file to the XP box, editing it, and saving it
back to the device will give it a later file date than the copy of that file
left back at the Vista box. If you are at all concerned about important
files, leave the file name the same but do a save-as with a different name
for backup, until you are comfortable. When using multiple PCs, and some of
us, multiple mobile devices, it is not hard to forget what you changed
between syncs, on what device, and lose something. Tends to be an operator
error more than a sync error though.
