Cannot Open IE after Windows Updates Vista Home

Windows Updates automatically installed at 3am - since then unable to open
IE. Have had to do a system restore to previous day to enable use of the
system. As this is a Security Update I am concerned that this could be a
potential threat. Is anyone able to resolve this problem in simple terms. I
have read other threads in relation to this problem, but having been on each
of the linked websites and read all the information (mind boggling) - I am
still none the wiser on how to fix this problem. I am not a technician and
live in the country - unable to have someone just pop in a fix it - in the
meantime it is costing me a fortune with usage with my ISP on looking up all
the information which to date has not been of assistance. So, PLEASE -
anyone who can help - in simple terms - how to fix this problem would be
GREATLY APPRECIATED.
Thank you in anticipation of a resolve.

Error message after you install a Windows Internet Explorer 7 update from
Windows Update or from Microsoft Update: "Webpage cannot be displayed":
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942818

If tweaking your third-party firewall's settings don't help, try the
following:

1. Disable your anti-virus application, any real-time protection provided by
an anti-spyware application (except for Windows Defender; includes Spybot
Tea Timer, SpySweeper Guards, AVG AS guard.exe, etc.), disable any
third-party firewall AND enable the Windows Firewall.

NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g.,
browsing; reading email; chatting) except #4 below until your anti-virus
application has been re-enabled! If you're running ZA Free firewall, you
may need to uninstall it instead of disabling it.

2. Uninstall "Security Update for Windows Internet Explorer 7 (KB947864)"
via Add/Remove Programs (make sure Show Updates box is checked at top right)
and reboot.

3. Re-do #1 above.

4. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install any Critical Updates
offered. If "Root Certificates" update is listed in the Optional Updates
category, you might install it, too, to take full advantage of IE7's
additional security.

5. Reboot > Make sure everything in #1 above is enabled again and, if
applicable, disable the Windows Firewall and enable your third-party
firewall.

I'm now having the same problem. Unable to connect to internet with IE7
after downloading 13 (or so) updates. Using Opera, I can connect no problem.

Can somebody please help?

I was reluctant to do that since I thought I read already that this fix was
specific to this particular user. Incidentally, the Kaspersky firewall is
and has been disabled. I'll try the rest of the fix and report back.

YES! It worked. Deleting that security update was the trick. Thanks so
much. Isn't Windows going to try to re-install that update though again as I
have Windows Update running in the background?

There was more to the fix than uninstalling ("deleting") the update! You
stopped at #2.

Yes, the update will be re-offered if you don't reinstall it manually per my
previous reply.

I went all the way through. Windows did install the update and after another
reboot, Kaspersky asked to allow the modification made to IE7. All is back
to normal now. Thanks again!

YW. Remember this fix in case you experience the same problem after
installing the next IE update (released just about every other month).

Thank you for your responses. I have automatic updates running. Hence each
day when I boot up, I first run system restore to the previous day and can
then connect to the internet. I have a question about the fix you have
posted PA Bear - when I have to uninstall the third party security I have -
does this use download time over the internet? - It's just that I am with
Telstra bigpond and the charges for extra usage are very expensive (to
re-install Security uses 200mb = $30 download cost) - or because I have the
Security software and disc - will it be the same as starting all over again?
Sorry to sound so dumb, but am really not sure whether I can afford to keep
reinstalling the same software every time Windows has an upgrade. Thanks so
much for your assistance.
