Cannot re-add a contact

I inadvertently removed a contact from Windows Live Messenger (8.0.0792.00).
When I try to re-add them, I get an error:

You have previously added a contact who uses this instant messaging address.
A contact's instant messaging address must be unique.

It seems that Messenger must be keeping some data around but I cannot find
it.

I have tried restarting Messenger and still cannot re-add the contact.

Any thoughts?

the contact you want.

Do a search for that contact by searching by email address (use the word
wheel), then right click the contact, click on edit contact, underneath
their email address there is a tick box that says to use this contact
for messenger as well.
