I downloaded microsofts updates and next step was to restart which I checked
ok.
The computer shut down and then tried to start up but stopped with the error
message a disk read error occurred.
Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to restart. This does not work. Unable to get into
safe mode or use my XP pro cd disk. Need help here.
Is it possible to start this computer from my laptop? My laptop uses vista
Ultimate. --
May the force be with you always!

It is a good assumption that your problem is related to a disk drive failure.

...sorry about above double post ><

I have the same exact problem after the August 16th windows update. My
laptop was working fine until the first time I powered up after restarting
for the update. Now I can not boot windows from HDD, or CD/DVD, or safe mode.
My HDD is only about 6months old, and was brand new when purchased, and
worked perfect right up until this update. Dose any body have advice on how
to fix this, I really don't want to spend the money for another drive ><

I'm having the same issue with a machine that I just migrated to a virtual
PC. The virtual machine was working fine until after a reboot from windows
updates. Argh!
