I have setup WUS to update a group of XP clients with SP2 and 20 of them are
OK except a few. One ot them keeps looping after windows XP flash screen and
does not go further. I tried to go to Safe mode and Last-Known-Good and it
still looped without restarting. Could anyone tell me what should I do next
besides reinstall XP?
This PC is HP D330T. What setup the Windows Update in WUS, do I need to
approve for all drivers as well so the client will use Microsoft drivers
instead of HP?

Thanks

I am experiencing similar issues on my personal machine and customers of mine
are experiencing them on some of their workstations as well.

All of wich have been regularly updated via MS Auto Update on WinXP SP2

My personal workstation is running on a Nvidia N-Force chipset v. 2 with an
AMD 2800 CPU.

One of my clients is running a Sony something or other. It doesn't seem to
be HP specific.

Let me know if you find anything.

I'll be watching for a follow up to this because its been happening to my machine
since it received a new drive and complete new XpHome plus all updates installed
Aug.11. The machine has been back to the shop and he couldn't replicate. He had my
wireless mouse and external drive but he didn't have the keyboard. I took the
keyboard over today. The machine did the automatic reboot cycle. He pulled the ram
and put it back in again. The machine booted well. This was tested several times and
it was fine. I've come home, started the machine and didn't it reboot THREE Times
before Windows XphomeSp2 started.
I'm going to leave the network cable that attaches to the satelite internet and home
network out at the next boot for that is the only peripheal that wasn't at the shop.
Of course the browser shuts down if it hits any website that is in conflict with the
recent IE6 security update but that's an additional can of worms.

I have a little more time now so I thought I'd mention a workaround that I
was able to use on my home machine WinXP Pro SP2 but did not work on my
customer's machine.

Using a utility like BartPE I booted from CD and retrieved backed up copies
of System Restore's copies of important files such as registery, system,
default, hardware, etc... 5 in all. They are somewhere under the path
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{[somelongnumberhere]}\RP??\ with new
preffixs ahead of the names.

Then copy them over to C:\WINDOWS\system32\config and shorten their names up
to match the originals.

Reboot. This will get the machine to reboot normally again.

Then do a propper System Restore using the WinXP utility so the rest of the
affected files are restored as well. We just did five, but the System
Restore function typically keeps track of many more files.

Sorry this isn't perfect but I am short on time and just wanted to get the
gist out there.

I don't know how to fix a machine with out a working System Restore Service.
With the service turned off before the update issue there aren't any files
to refference when attempting to restore them.

Once you get the system booted, go into System Properties (right click
MyComputer --> Properties), go to the advanced tab and under startup and
recovery, uncheck automatically restart.

The next time you bet a BSOD, instead of the system rebooting into an
endless cycle, the screen will stay up so you can then copy the error
message for proper troubleshooting.

Interesting idea. Is there a way to change the boot.ini file for systems
that are unable to boot? Maybe insert a /switch of somekind?

The reason I ask is the systems that are doing this will not Recover from
Last Known Good, nor boot into Safe mode of any kind.

I can use a WinPE or BartPE disk to access the systems however.

Can you get into the F8 menu?
Supposedly there is a checkbox there too (ref. KB885523)

If you have access to the system's registry (e.g. via networking or dualbooting)
you can use regedit's load hive command and zap the appropriate
value in that system's HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
