Just bought a new WM5 device to replace my "old" WM5 device (only 4 months
old). Running Vista x64 RTM with WMDC Final. I Ended the partnership with
my old wm5 device on vista, setup the new device to have the same name and
created a new partnership with vista. And the new device insist on changing
the Device ID everything it syncs to something else. And when I tried to
manually change the Device ID on the WM5 while connected to the old Device
ID, it keeps on complaining that a device with the same name already exists
on the network!

This is very annoying. I have bought software which are keyed to the same
Device ID! So what do I do now?

Hi,

It seems that you must have created the desktop partnership with the old
device when you were running the beta version of WMDC.

I assume that when you say "Device ID" you are referring to the Device
Friendly Name that is shown below the Device Image on the main WMDC UI. It
is a known issue where-in any Device Friendly Name used for a partnership
created with beta WMDC version cannot be used for a partnership created with
WMDC RTM. Hence, you will have to use a new Device Friendly Name for the new
partnership with WMDC RTM. (There is an exception though. If you delete the
old partnership while only running beta WMDC, you can re-use the same Device
Friendly Name for the new partnership created with WMDC RTM).

The Device Hardware Id is completely different than the Device Friendly Name
and it will be unique for each device. You mentioned that some of the
software you bought are keyed to the old Device ID. In this case if they are
keyed to your old Device Hardware ID, then you will have to re-key them to
the Hardware ID of the new device you bought.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thanks,
Abdulkadar

Yes I meant the device friendly name. A lot of the ppc softwares general a
unique id based on the friendly name (Device name in the about tab on ppc)
and if I cannot reuse the same device name, I have a major issue on my hand.
And yes, I had WMDC B3 installed prior to the final and had been using the
old device since B3.

Is there absolutely nothing that I can do to fix this? I am comfortable
with regedit and such.......

Nevermind. Went into the registry and deleted the partnership with the old
device name on it (after I deleted from the WMDC). And all is well.....
