Hi

I used to be able to install Windows updates right from the site, then all
of the sudden couldn't. They would always fail. When I finally investigated
the log file I found that it thought I was not an administrator. Since I was
signed in under an account with administrator status this didn't make sense,
but I forgot about it and waited a month for SP2 to come out. When trying to
install SP2 I got the following message right after the files unzipped
(downloaded the full network install): "You do not have permission to update
Windows XP. Please contact your system administrator." Unamused I logged on
locally and not on my domain as Administrator. When it still gave the same
wrror, I tried the following:

Added Administrator or made sure it was there to ALL local security rights.
YEs I got logging, backups, act as part of the OS, everything, and no I did
not add it to the Deny list anywhere...
Took ownership of EVERY file on my C drive, and also set rights for all of
them to full control for administrator (inherited both of these from the root
of the C drive to all others).
Tried in safe mode.
Also, I can view the security tab in the Event Viewer, and I AM signed on as
Administrator locally (which has not been renamed).

Now that the Windows Update site has been updated I tried again, and it
failed on the very first install it attempted to do which was: Update for
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1
(KB842773). The error message in the log is the following: Error Code:
8007F004.

Now I'm out of resources. Anyone have any ideas??

If you have a broadband internet connection, go here to download Service
Pack 2 to your desktop. Simply click the Install button.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Then you can burn it to a CD and distribute it to anyone in your family who
needs it. Same with your friends and neighbors.

I did download that. That's the issue. I can't install it for the reasone I
outlined. I can't install the network version (you link) or the express
install on the web site.
