Cannot Run Automatic Update w/XPPsp3

My user had the Vundo virus which has been eradicated.
Still cannot get AU to start no matter what KB method we have tried.

Just because your antivirus says it's clean, it doesn't necessarily mean it
is. Chances are your AV can't detect the remaining infection because Vundo
hides it so well.

The infection is still there or it damaged some system related files. Either
way, the preferred method is flatten and rebuild (format/reinstall OS).

hi John, I have another post on this below.
But, flattening is not an option as my user is remote and I need to get him
back in a safe computing mode tonight. Reimaging his laptop while he is
remote is just not an option.
