I get far enough to see the express/custom screen in windows update but
receive the 0x800704DD error if I click either. windows update.log indicates
a fatal error unable to initiate asynchronous search hr=800704dd. I was
receiving windows updates prior to 1/16/09. Please help.

Error messages that you may receive when you try to download and install
updates from the Windows Update Web site, from the Microsoft Update Web
site, or from a WSUS server: "0x800704DD," "0x80240020," or both:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/910341

NB: Skip to Section B.

The entire SensLogn key was missing. I added it plus all the entries and it
didn't work. Can you offer any other suggestions?

You Need to run http://www.superantispyware.com/. I had the same problems
and I ran that and now I got windows to update and my computer is running
faster. Do a full scan of the computer (mine took about 1 1/2 hours) after
that go to malwarebytes.org and download and run the same thing. then try to
update windows.

Chances are that you're seeing the affects of a hijackware infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run additional checks for hijackware, including posting your hijackthis
log to an appropriate forum.

When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.exe) is the preferred tool to use (in
conjuction with some other utilities). HijackThis will NOT fix anything on
its own, but it will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware with assistance from an expert. **Post your log to
http://spywarehammer.com/simplemachi...php?board=10.0,
http://forums.spybot.info/forumdisplay.php?f=22,
http://aumha.net/viewforum.php?f=30, or another appropriate forum for review
by an expert in such matters, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

These did not work. As a matter of fact, malwarebytes won't run anything
other than a quick scan. When I attempt to do a full scan the product hangs
and I need to reboot the PC. Is there an active x update that I need to run
maybe? I see the active x control bar flash when it checks windows update
and then I get the 800704dd error.

As you know, the SensLogn key should have been in a key named Notify which is in
a key named Winlogon. Is there by any chance another key in Winlogon named
Notify_disabled or something similar to that?

Harry.
