The "workaround" offered by microsoft does not work. Maybe you might have a
suggestion that works. I've tried many and feel that the true problem began when I downloaded the Beta Defender. Uninstalling it does not help, reinstalling it does not help....all the suggestions offered this far DO NOT HELP! "TaurArian [MS-MVP]" wrote: > 1. Here are two possibilities namely the temporary folder of WU has become
corrupted/damaged and also the the ActiveX control has corrupted. 1. Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder (it will be recreated next time you visit WU again) You will lose your history but that's not important. Click Start, Choose Run. In the Run box, type services.msc. Click OK. Right-click the Automatic Updates service. Click Stop. Stopping the service will take a moment. Rename the "SoftwareDistribution" folder: a. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%, and then click OK. b. Right-click the SoftwareDistribution folder, and then click Rename. c. Type SoftwareDistribution.old, and then press ENTER to rename this folder. Click Start. Choose Run. In the Run box, type services.msc. Click OK. Right-click the Automatic Updates service. Click Start. Starting the service will take a moment. 2. How to remove a corrupted Active X control Start IE and then click Tools/Internet Options On the General Tab choose Settings under Temporary Internet Files Then click on View Objects. Right Click WuWebControl Class and choose remove Right Click MuWebControl Class and choose remove Now you need to delete the files from your hard drive, locate and delete the files c:\windows\system32\wuweb.dll and c:\windows\system32\muweb.dll Now revisit WU and redownload the activex controls 3. Finally if you want to force a detection cycle in AU then close IE Now click on Start and select Run Type wuauclt.exe /detectnow in the Open box and click OK Try the WU again -- ================================== TaurArian [MS-MVP] 2005-2007 - Australia ================================== http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm Need more help? http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;6527 (Links to web pages and MSKB Articles are posted for the purposes of keeping the information current) "Soaked" <> wrote in message news:82D4BD3A-42FF-4742-95CB-... | The "workaround" offered by microsoft does not work. TaurArian, your post is extremely helpful.
I found a problem however in removing the corrupted ActiveX control. Following your instructions I get to WuWebControl Class, but there is no MuWebControl Class entry. On right clicking WuWebContol Class there is no remove option. It's properties indicate that it's two files are damaged. If you need to reinstall the ActiveX controls (because they may have become
corrupt):- Download this file and save to the desktop, then extract the files to a temporary folder. http://download.windowsupdate.com/v6...gent20-x86.exe Open the temp folder, right-click Wusetup.inf, and then click Install. Reboot. If that hasn't help, then, Click Start, click Run, type: %windir%\System32 Delete the following files: .. Cdm.dll .. Iuengine.dll .. Wuapi.dll .. Wuauclt.exe .. Wuauclt1.exe .. Wuaucpl.cpl .. Wuaueng.dll .. Wuaueng1.dll .. Wucltui.dll .. Wups.dll .. Wuweb.dll Go back to your temporary file and again right-click Wusetup.inf and then click install. Reboot. If you are unsure about deleting files - you can always move them to a temporary location. -- ================================== TaurArian [MS-MVP] 2005-2007 - Australia ================================== http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm Need more help? http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=ph;en-us;6527 (Links to web pages and MSKB Articles are posted for the purposes of keeping the information current) "bunkoman" <> wrote in message news:6B4A80B2-D2BD-4ECD-8B8B-... | TaurArian, your post is extremely helpful. | I found a problem however in removing the corrupted ActiveX control. | Following your instructions I get to WuWebControl Class, but there is no | MuWebControl Class entry. | On right clicking WuWebContol Class there is no remove option. Thanks again TaurArian for your help.
Could you please advise whether your instructions are tested for Vista application. My Vista RC2 won't accept installation.
