Cannot run Windows updates

I have been unable to run Windows updates for approximately 3 weeks. I am
running Windows XP with SP2 (version 5.1 Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_qfe.08014-1242).
I first noticed this when I tried to download and install Windows Search 4.0
(and I have confirmed Terminal Services is running for this one), but have
also noticed an inability to install the following High Priority updates
which are now available to for my computer:

KB961118
KB967715
KB890830
KB960715
KB961260
KB951847 x86
KB959634
KB960353
KB967912

I haven't bothered to try any of the Optional software updates.

The most recent changes to my computer during this phase are the
configuration and usage of Outlook 2007 and the installation and use of
Office Communicator 2007. I have also installed a client for a product
called vApps (necessary in my work environment). Noone else in our pilot
group has reported this issue yet; it may not be related to these three
applications.

Your help is appreciated.

Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):

SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/

After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.

Reboot.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net stop wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\wups2.dll
--> Click OK.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemRoot%\system32\net start wuauserv
--> Click OK.

Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
.... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:

Close all Internet Explorer windows and other applications.

Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
--> Click OK.

(If asked, select "Run") --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...

Reboot.

Download/Install the latest Windows Installer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/d...displaylang=en

Reboot.

Log on as a user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer and
visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a CUSTOM scan...
(Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.)

Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it.

Reboot again.

If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a
time.

The Optional Software updates are generally safe - although I recommend
against the "Windows Search" one. I would completely avoid the Optional
Hardware updates.

Come back - let us know if that worked.
.... Really - come back and let everyone know if that worked.

Also - any reason you have not updated to Windows XP SP3 at this time?

How to troubleshoot Windows Update, Microsoft Update, and Windows Server
Update Services installation issues:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906602

1. See the "Need more help? Tell us what problem you are having" section of
http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527

2. You cannot install some updates or programs
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798

3a. Check your WindowsUpdate.log (%windir%\WindowsUpdate.log) for errors
associated with the download/install.

How to read the WindowsUpdate.log file

3b. Compare errors to those listed here:

and/or go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com > click on Help and Support
link in left pane > Solve problems on your own.

However, there is a very good chance are that you are seeing the affects of
a hijackware infection.

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):
http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this

I was able to run MalwareBytes (just did so a couple of weeks ago) and it
found nothing. I also ran SuperAntiSoftware -- it found a bunch of adware
stuff and I deleted/quarantined it. I then proceeded with your next steps
and got hung up on the step to run %SystemRoot%\system32\regsvr32
%SystemRoot%\system32\wups2.dll. It turned up this error:
DllRegisterServer in c:\windows\system32\wups2.dll failed. Return code was
: 0x8007005

How should I proceed? On another note, we haven't gone to SP3 yet because
our development team hasn't finished testing it for our environment.

Thanks.

Are you logged in with an account that is a member of the "administrators"
