Cannot run winupdate

WinXp, updated as of Nov 2008
Set to download & notify
A couple of days ago I noticed the downloading updates Icon, showed 22% &
remained at that all day
I cleared temp files & rebooted
Accessed windows update from IE7 in a new tab, tab froze, switched to other
tab and was able to access sites. Closed IE7, all tabs, other tabs closed
but winupdate tab remained open, used Ctrl+Alt+Del to end IE7 - msg not
responding
Tried Office Update with same result.
Tried with FF 3.04 in IE Tab FF froze, same result for Office update
Tried Winupdate via security centre - connecting then froze Ctrl+Alt+Del to
end process

Scanned with multiple malaware apps & AV (Which auto updated its
deffinitions 1 hour ago)
All clear
Nothing in Event Viewer

A search to include hidden shows the file, attempting to rename in Explorer,

Finally managed to run all this from Cmd in safe mode.
Ran update from within winxp help/support centre, it actually ran, but after
a few mins of searching for updates terminated with the generic msg/send
report etc
Fired up FF, ran MSUpdate, it ran, gave me the updates and successfuly
installed them
