I cannot save my default Display Picture

I am using Windows Live Messenger Version 2009 (Build 14.0.8064.206) and am
unable to change my default Display Picture. Every time that I sign in with
Messenger my default Display Picture gets reset to the little grey pawn. If
I go and use Change Picture to select a new picture then it works just fine.
However, if I log out of WLM and sign in again then my previously selected
picture is gone and replaced with the grey pawn picture.

I have the checkmark in the "Show my display picture and allow others to see
it" option. This option was retained from my MSN 8.5 settings.

Under Security preferences I have a checkmark in this "This is a shared
computer. Don't save my contact list or what's new information on it"
option. I had this option set in MSN 8.5 prior to this so I can't imagine
this as being the problem.

What is the problem? How can I fix this?

Greetings Jim,

I do believe when you engage that latter option you mentioned in 2009, it pulls all the
necessary data it needs off the server as opposed to using the local cache.

So, since you've always had that option on, it's possible that the server has never actually
gotten your display picture. That said, you might want to try turning this function off,
change your display picture to something else, then switch it back to what you want (to get
it saved). Then switch the feature back on again.

Finally, close Messenger and restart it to see if it then keeps your display picture.

Jonathan,

Thank you for the suggestion. By de-selecting the option "This is a shared
computer. Don't save my contact list or what's new information on it" my
Display Picture is saved. When I restart Messenger, my saved Display
Picture appears. So far, so good. At this point, I put a checkmark in the
option "This is a shared computer. Don't save my contact list or what's new
information on it" and save this setting. I log out of Messenger then sign
back in again. My default picture has returned to the grey pawn. This is
not what I was hoping would happen.

I'd say that this is a change in the feature set between WLM & MSN 8.5.
This is a nuisance having to choose my Display Picture every time I sign in
with Messenger. I don't want to save any of my Messenger information on my
computer or any other computer that I might use to access Messenger.

Is anyone else having problems saving their default online photo?

Yes, I experience the same behaviour using Windows Live Messenger Version
2009 (Build 14.0.8064.206).

I've been experiencing a similar behaviour, and I don't have and have never
had the checkbox selected for "This is a shared computer. Don't save my
contact list or what's new information on it"

Selecting that option, clicking apply caused my picture to switch to the
grey MSN icon. De-selecting that option and clicking apply caused my picture
to switch back to an older version and not the one I had selected before I
started testing the option.
