Could NOT save in any of these programs after the automatic windows update
this weekend 4/16/06. Nor could I do a system restore to undo these updates.
This is RIDICULOUS! If we are suppose to trust Microsoft updates to be SAFE
and not mess up our computers then Microsoft should ensure they are SAFE
before distributing. Can imagine the cummulative number of hours people have
spent trying to fix this on their computers or the amount of revenue
generated to"Geek Squad" or other computer fixing people in order to fix this
issue for the novice . So where should we be send the invoice for billable
hours? How are we suppose to trust updates?

To viewers, to fix this since you cannot do system restore on your computer
to any previous date, you have to remove the updates individually from My
Computer, Add/Remove Programs, REMOVE Security 908531, Hotfix 912812 and
911567. Restart your computer and you will now be able to SAVE DOCUMENTS in
MS Programs.
Also, I've turned off my automatic updates and will look for any issues
before individually installing, not again will I waste hours because of
Microsoft inability to validate their product before distribution. Microsoft
know these type of issues seriously affects your credibility with end users.

Hope this helps and saves people some time and money on fixing their
computers after the latest 'windows update'!

By any chance do you have HP scanner software, (all-in-one's included),
on the systems that are having problems?

It might be of interest to install the updates 1 at a time and see if you
come to the same conclusion that it is actually kb912812 that caused an issue
for me in using ms office

I agree though that this is an example of very poor testing of their
product. I am using office 2000 and i only had the opportunity to test
access but the patch I referrenced above definitely had a bad effect on the
software

I had a similar problem this weekend:

* unable to expand + in Explorer
* unable to Save in Word (but Excel, notepad were OK)

I was able to use system restore to go back and undue these problems.

I turned off Automatic update.

How does Microsoft interface regarding this sort of problem with updates?
How do I know if Microsoft knows about and resloved the problem?
Does system restore uninstall these updates?

Hi Cory, did try backing out one at a time, 912812 then 911567, then 908531,
but it took all 3 to be removed before Programs and system was working right
again. Believe it is the shell portion of 908531 that is tieing it all
together and causing many of the underlying issues in system.

Try going here for a simple solution: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165

It should address your problem and correction.

Thanks Mike, I'd rather not mess with Registry or advise anyone to do so, as
I support multiple novice end users, it is better just not to install the
update at all. If Microsoft can't send windows updates without problems,
just assume not have them all. The fact end user should have to do anything
to fix a fix is just wrong and added to the fact System Restore doesn't work
after this update is another issue. Really the biggest issue is that this is
an automatic window install and should be thoroughly tested before sending
out and nothing should EVER disable System Restore, just in case there are
problems!

Hi -

While I agree that Microsoft should (and does a great amount of ) testing
their updates - they can only test a finite number of computer setups and
software combinations.

If they could predict every computer setup that existed out there with the
various permutations of installed software, you would see no errors at all
with any of the released updates, or even _need_ updates in the first place.

With that being said - I think you are right in not wanting to install the
update, and I probably wouldn't either. Microsoft is re-releasing this
update with the appropriate fixes in short order. I would wait until the
re-release is out and install that update when time permits for you.

A point about System Restore - while handy, is target #2 for viruses (your
OS being #1) - many people have disabled this feature because performing a
system restore usually is the first thing that people try after getting
viruses, and then they are just exacerbating the problem. I think System
Restore has its benefits, but I just wanted to bring that up.

Not even Microsoft is perfect...

For other readers of this post:
How can you be sure to not get viruses? Be smart, don't click 'yes' when
you should be reading those pop-ups and click 'no', keep your AV up to date,
and *yes, keep installing those Microsoft Updates on your computer.*
Usually, they are 100% safe, but occasionally, there is one that will cause
issues with certain combinations of software.

The best thing you could do (which you already are doing) is frequent these
newsgroups.

Regards,
Rob
