Problems saving files under a new name

I use Word Pro for word processing. I can save changed documents but if I
try to save under a new name, using the Save As option I get a message
"Cannot write to directory C:\ Documents and Settings\etc\etc"

I believe this may be caused by a recent Windows update.

Any ideas?

"campden",

I am sorry you are hitting this issue. Perhaps something happened to the
directory you are saving in, and your username has lost a privilege. In
whatever directory your files typically are, try this:

Conventions:
- In these instructions, keys on the keyboard are wrapped, such as: <Enter>,
so an instruction of: Type: cmd <Enter> means type the three letters cmd and
then press <Enter>.
- Combinations such as <Ctrl>+<S> mean to hold the <Ctrl> while then
pressing the <S>.

Open a command prompt:
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type: cmd <Enter>

Create the script:
4. In the Command Prompt, type: notepad C:\wufree.cmd <Enter>
5. When the window opens, confirm that you wish to create the file.
6. Copy and paste the following text into the notepad file:
ECHO y| CACLS.EXE "ReplaceThis" /E /T /G %username%:F
7. Minimize this file or leave it where it is while you perform the next
steps, but do not close it.

Get the directory above the relevant files:
8. Go to the folder where you normally find your documents.
9. In this same window, on the Menu bar, click Tools
10. Click Folder Options...
11. Click the View tab
12. Check the box for "Display the full path in the title bar". Verify it
is checked before closing.
13. Click OK to close the Folder Options window
14. Click in the Address field of the folder, which should be completely
highlighted. If not, press <Ctrl>+<A>
15. Copy with <Ctrl>+<C>

Paste the directory into the script, save and close:
16. Go back to the script you created in steps 4-7.
17. Highlight the text between quotes: ReplaceThis
18. Press <Ctrl>+<V>, which should paste the path between the quotes. If
not, please repeat steps 14-15 and this step to copy then paste the path.
Please verify that a set of quotes surrounds this path.
19. Save the file by pressing <Ctrl>+<S>, or click File, then Save.
20. Close this file

Execute the file:
21. In the Command Prompt again, type: C:\wufree.cmd <Enter>
22. You should see directories and files that are changed.

Try Word Pro again:
23. Close all Word Pro documents
24. Reboot the computer
25. After reboot, try the Word Pro behavior again, and see if anything
changes.

Please reply back and let us know how this goes.

Sincerely,

Pat Walters [MSFT]
