cannot scan for updates error no 0x80072F89

Icannot scan my pc for updating windows as the above message keeps appearing
- has anyone else encountered this and can it be resolved?

I have similar problem today error 0x80240030]

I had the same problem with Internet Explorer but ran Maxton instead of IE
and the Microsoft Update works. Very interesting. A Microsoft program can
not fix itself but a another program from a competitor can fix Microsoft
programs.
It's free and can be downloaded at http://www.maxthon.com/. Once installed
run it instead of Internet Explorer and give it the address
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/ to get to the Microsoft update
page.

When searching for available updates on the Update site, you receive the 0x80240030
error.
