Cannot send messages in Outlook 2002 using aol

I want to receive and send messages in outlook 2002 using aol. I’ve set up
outlook per instructions. Although I receive outlook, I cannot send messages
in Outlook, I get the following error message:
Task 'imap.aol.com - Sending' reported error (0x800CCC78) : 'Unable to send
the message. Please verify the e-mail address in your account properties. The
server responded: 556 CLIENT AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED. USE ESMTP EHLO AND
AUTH.'

I set the account up as follows:
1.) In Outlook, go to “Tools�, “Email accounts�, select “Add a new email
account� and click the “next� button, then select “IMAP� and configure as
follows:
IMAP/SMTP

Filled in user info (name and email address).

Set server info as follows:
Incoming mail server (IMAP): imap.aol.com
Outgoing mail server (SMTP): smtp.aol.com

Filled in login info (screen name)
Click the “More Settings� button, and then the “Advanced� tab and set your
server Port Numbers as follows:
Incoming server (IMAP): 143
Outgoing server (SMTP): 587
Set “Outgoing Server� tab and check the top box that says “My outgoing
server (SMTP) requires authentication� and also mark the radio button right
under it that say “Use the same settings as my incoming mail server�.
OK
Finish
I still receive the message error (0x800CCC78) : 'Unable to send the
message. Please verify the e-mail address in your account properties. The
server responded: 556 CLIENT AUTHENTICATION REQUIRED. USE ESMTP EHLO AND
AUTH.' ( Again, I can receive messages, just not send them.)
What can I do to resolve this problem?
